Learning to play the flute Not all beginner flutes are created equal.

Your first flute can have a huge impact on how easily (or how challenging) it is for you to learn to play your first tune.

There are a lot of beginner flutes on the market and some people have great success with just about any flute they try.

But others run into problems with a flute that they just can't solve no matter how hard they try.

If you've never played the flute before, it's a good idea to start with one of the products I reviewed here.

The best flutes for beginners fall into four categories. Here's more information about each one.

GLEAM Music Stand Bold Pipe Folding Music Holder

Pros:

  • Sturdy, reliable metal music stand
  • Allegedly durable
  • Comes with a carrying bag

Cons:

  • Not air tight
  • Not large enough to hold wide-spaning sheets of music

Looking for a good music stand for your flute? Owning one of these is a smart investment. The quality is well-made and you can fold it up and put it into a small carrying bag when it’s time to transport it.

The only downside is that it’s not air tight, and it’s not wide enough to grasp larger pieces of music, so it’s probably best to keep the song sheets of music together when you store them. It’s best to store it upright, as wetness of your music in the summer could cause dampening.

The Glory flute does have a bit of a learning curve. That said, if you are a beginner who wants to learn how to play the flute, this is an excellent choice.

It comes with the case, the flute, the rod, and the cloth, and the case is a nice hard case as opposed to the squishy gig bags. It’s in the lower price range and plays great.

The tone is beautiful and warm and some would say it doesn’t have high-end shine, but then again, it’s not supposed to. Many pro flutists are happy with the sound.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the best flute to buy for a beginner?

Which flute is best for learning?

There is no single flute that is "best" for beginners because playing a flute is a very personal activity. Depending on what you want to do and where you want to go, you will have different needs. The first thing to do is to decide what you want to do with a flute and where you want to go. Will you be an orchestral flutist? Do you want the BMFA grade five? Will you be playing in college? Then buy a flute that is good for that. Will you have a super light weight beginner one for adding to your suitcase for vacations?

What are the best brands of flutes?

Knowing some brands makes it faster to look for one you can afford and that will sound right. There are many options available to you. Many guitar companies make karimbas and xylophones; there were hundreds of flutes at the most recent World Music Expo. Some of my favorites include:

Forsberg (Sweden): This company makes beautiful Lignum Vitae instruments that sound incredible and last for generations. They’re very reasonably priced for what you get, too. Forsberg also makes Ebony and Rosewood flutes.

Sweet Bamboo Flutes: These are my favorite flutes! They are beautiful in design and sound. The company ships worldwide, and they also sell flute stands, oil, and other accessories.

Akai: You can see them at world music festivals around the world (and in our store) and can also find them online at Steel Tongue Drums.

Are flutes easy to learn?

Flutes are somewhat easier to learn than other musical instruments, but there is a definite learning curve involved. One of the biggest challenges you may encounter will be the physical strength necessary to create music.

The mouthpieces of most flutes require a certain amount of strength to position properly in your mouth. It may feel uncomfortable to press down on that hard surface, but you’ll get used to it after a while.

The proper manner in which to make music with a flute is another factor that will take some time to perfect. Retraining your mouth and hands to work together can be a tough adjustment.

You also have to be open to the possibility that you might not be a natural. Learning any instrument takes a lot of time and dedication. Some of us are blessed with a quick learning process and knack for music, while others have to work harder for the same results.

Conclusion

As an amateur flutist myself, I understand how frustrating it can be to live with that low-quality student flute that you got when you began your study. I know the difference between the sound quality of a professional flute and its plastic counterpart, and I can attest that it is huge. I wouldn’t even want to give that cheap flute to my kid brother. But if you live on a budget, and you simply don’t have the money to splurge on a more experienced player’s professional flute, here’s a solution for you: a low-priced alternative.
