Best Patio Heaters

Did you know there are several types of patio heaters?

Before you embark on your patio heater shopping adventure, it’s important to note the type of patio heater that will suit your needs. For instance, if you’re looking for patio heaters that just heat up the surrounding area (rather than the air) then the best choice probably isn’t traditional patio or deck space heaters, but instead are patio heaters with supplemental propane burners.

The most popular patio heaters are the old school patio heaters that heat up a small surrounding area, rather than nebulizing the air. They do this instead by heating up lit gas, which then rises and warms the surrounding air. Think of the flame on a fireplace or a gas heater.

Whether you want a furnace style propane heater or an infrared patio heater, your patio heater should be able to heat a 20–x– foot radius.

Aside from the types of patio heaters you can choose as well as the types of heaters, the type of patio heater that will suit your needs is the one that you can keep running all day, without having to tend to it or adjust it. That’s the case with other types of patio heaters, too.

Our rating: 9 / 10

Dr. Infrared Heater 1500W carbon infrared heater indoor outdoor patio garage wall or ceiling Mount

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Less Expensive than Natural Gas Units
  • Much Better for Your Electric Grid
  • Can Be Vessel Pitched

Cons:

  • Can’t be Used Indoors
  • Fan is Loud

There are two separate heating methods for infrared heaters and which one is best for you greatly depends on your intended use. Since Infrared HVLP heaters are used outside, safety in natural gas ruled out the use of natural gas as a heating method. The Dr. Infrared heater used for this project was small enough that the gas line could be ran outside and the exhaust could be routed directly outside. If the Dr. Infrared Heater 1500W Carbon Infrared Heater had been bigger or if the gas line had been installed inside the building a natural gas unit would have been preferred over the Infrared HVLP. The reason is that the combustion released by the natural gas would have been corrosive to the gas line and exhaust vent. Not to mention the fact that the exhaust would have to have been vented to the exterior of the building. This would cause a substantial extra cost to exhaust the combustion outside in addition to the cost of running a gas line inside the building to the gas unit.

The Hilland Patio heater is a very reasonably priced outdoor patio heater. This is a 1500 watt electric patio heating unit. It has a safety auto shut-off and it is actually made 100 percent from rust-resistant steel.

This outdoor patio heater is significantly smaller than I expected. It stands at 35 inches and is designed to stay in place on your patio and not be portable. I was surprised as it was only rated at 1500 watts and to me that seemed low for such a small patio heater. However, when I used it I found that it did the job of heating my friends and I sufficiently. It works great as a space heater to sit around and keep you warm during the cold nights.

My friend and I sat outside for several hours and it kept us quite warm. We did not require additional blankets to stay warm till we decided to head in. We were so comfortable, that we didn't want to go inside.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which patio heater is the best?

Is there a reason to choose electric over propane? I usually prefer electric patio heaters to propane, simply because current technology makes them much safer than propane heaters (even though propane is typically cheaper). However, the type’s of patio heaters and cost is going to be a huge determining factor in your decision. For example, if you can find an indoor propane heater that fits within your patio heating budget, it might be a better choice than an electric model.

What is the most efficient outdoor heater?

The most efficient way to preserve your heating costs in the winter is not to use a heater and go with extra clothing, blankets, and an extra pair of socks. That being said, in certain climates heating the outdoors may be the only option. When that is the case, the best outdoor heating option is not a solid heater but a propane patio heater. Propane patio heaters are portable and often light enough to move around.

The heaters run on butane or propane, both of which are odorless and nontoxic, unlike many kerosene heaters. Propane heaters last longer, and they are much safer. Of course these are also much more expensive than regular kerosene heaters.

Do patio heaters really work?

While gas-fueled models are becoming more and more popular, electric heaters are still the most popular choice for patio heaters. They tend to be quieter, more portable, and safer than their counterparts.

Even if you plan on using a patio heater, make sure you’re prepared in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. A gas heater is much better at turning your patio into an extension of your home than an electric heater-but if the power goes out, an electric patio heater will accomplish little to keep you warm. A gas-fueled patio heater will still make it possible for you to enjoy your patio, even if the heat isn’t turned on. I have had some issues with wind and the flame flickering on this particular model. I have a propane patio heater from a different brand that I like much better.

How many Btus do I need to heat my patio?

The right patio heater will be more necessary based on the size and design of your patio.

There are a lot of patio heaters that output more BTUs than necessary (when you don’t need that much), which wastes energy. You should look for a patio heater with 4,000-5,000 BTUs. If you don’t have anyone to help you move the patio heater when moving between patio and indoors, you should consider a tabletop patio heater because they are much lighter.

Tiki Patio Heater: 14,000 BTUs. This is the patio heater that I use on my covered patio and my deck. I love it.
