(Sanding, Wood Filler, Epoxy Kit)

After years of filling and sanding, I decided it would be nice to have a discussion with friends about wood fillers, the ins and outs of different brands.

Is one wood filler better than another, is it really worth spending the extra money on a top-of-the-line brand?

I had a long chat with a couple of friends and we’ve come up with the results on the best wood fillers on the market, as well as a couple of helpful tips for your next wood project.

After some very extensive research to look for the top notch, high quality, good stuff, these were the top wood fillers out there — you can’t really go wrong with any of the top brands. If you feel like doing double duty, there are some good wood fillers that also include an epoxy resin kit, giving you two products in one for the price of one.

It’s elastic, so it doesn’t crack and can expand to fill bigger holes if necessary. It’s also more durable than other fillers like epoxy. The company claims that you can sand their wood filler and paint over it about 6 weeks after application, which is a huge convenience. Be aware that this doesn’t mean you need to paint within 6 weeks. If, in a week or two, the repair is holding up well, you can always go back and wait to paint until later.

Cons:

This is the best wood filler I have ever used. I wouldn’t trust anything else after trying this.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are the best wood fillers?

Wood filler is another somewhat confusing term, so let’s break things down so you can find the one that’s best for you. This phrase can be used to describe either a type of wood or a type of product.

Wood Fillers: Wood Fillers are the scraps of wood you might need to fill a hole in a plank of wood. Wood has an innate tendency to take on moisture, which can cause small cracks in the wood that need to be filled. For these very small, shallow cracks, wood filler is the right choice. To fill much larger holes, you may need to cut new pieces of wood, with which you will replace the broken pieces. The result is likely stronger than the wood filler, but it will be more expensive to fix. Look for wood filler at any hardware store.

What is the difference between wood putty and wood filler?

Wood putty is usually used for smaller holes, chips, or cracks. It softens to a paste and can be pressed into any shape; then it’s easily sanded away without leaving an ugly finish like filler can. Wood filler, on the other hand, has a tendency to be dryer and more brittle; it’s used for filling larger holes or covering a larger amount of wood than wood putty would.

What is the best wood filler for large gaps?

The best wooden fillers are wood putty, epoxy mixed with wood filler, and wood glue as a filler. These are good because they harden enough to support the wood.

What is the strongest wood filler?

PVA wood filler is by far the strongest. It will pretty much cure in any position and dries hard enough to take a good sanding and then paint. The alternative is gap filling epoxy putty. This sets up hard and is completely waterproof once it has dried, but it cannot be sanded until it has dried. Other than that it is fairly similar to PVA.

PVA glues can be used in many applications its activity sets in between 4 and 30 minutes but when it hardens it can be stressed for 20 minutes without cracking and has a bond strength around 21MPa so its pretty strong stuff.

Conclusion

No matter which type of wood you choose to work on, whether it’s half-inch plywood, quarter-inch plywood, or something else, the key to any successful restoration or repair job lies in the wood filler you use. When done correctly, wood fillers can look fantastic, and it will seem like you never did a repair job. When done poorly, it looks like you never did a repair. It’s all about the filler you choose.
